Our Area

Welcome to beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where we live and enjoy the full four seasons.  Iron County is located in the South Western area of the U.P. and our county alone boasts over 300 inland lakes and roughly 1,000 miles of rivers to fish and float.

We have hundreds of miles of recreational trails for both the summer and winter outdoor enthusiasts. We are home to Ski Brule Mountain, one of the most popular and revisited ski hills in the U.P. The Western half of Iron County is comprised of Ottawa National Forest, an ideal location for a person looking to meet up with nature, at it’s finest.

Iron County’s major thoroughfare is US-2 which traverses the county east to west, going through Iron River and Crystal Falls. Other major roadways are US-141 going from the Wisconsin border through Crystal Falls and north through Amasa to Baraga County. M-69 from Crystal Falls east to Dickinson County, M-189 and M-73 from Iron River south to the Wisconsin border, and County Rd 424 from US-2 south of Crystal Falls to M-189 west of Caspian. Federal Forest highway runs north and south from the Wisconsin border at Phelps to the Houghton County line near Kenton.

Iron County’s back yard is host to softball, both adult and little leagues. Golf, soccer, disc golf, sled dog races, fat bike racing, parades in every season, and the U.P. Championship Rodeo, to name just a few of our community events. Our area is full of small town pride and community togetherness, with big town activities. Where we really do care for thy neighbor!

We have a wonderful Chamber of Commerce visitor informational center where staff and volunteers rally together to make our county one of the best places in the U.P. to live or visit. We have museums that are rich in history. We have elder care facilities; Iron County Medical Care Facility and the Iron River Care Center.

Iron County is made up of twelve small governing entities, the two largest cities are Iron River and Crystal Falls City and each are surrounded by other small cities and the townships, Stambaugh Township, Bates Township, Crystal Falls Township and Iron River Township. There are two major school systems, Forest Park, home of the Trojan and West Iron County, home of the Wykon, both serving Pre K - 12. We have many churches and two major libraries

The county seat is located in Crystal Falls which offers a lesson in history all it’s own. Check out all of the area links that we have provided for you, these are the best informational roadmaps of our county.
